How does it feel when your phone runs out on you, especially when you need it the most? Phones are not just about communication anymore, they become a part of you. The applications, tasks and utilities an average phone is capable of is astounding. On the flip-side, all those applications consume power, and power that is very limited.

Which brings me to my next question, why can’t phones become power efficient and become capable of dragging on for a few more hours? A power efficient phone should have different profiles to choose from depending on the power consumption. For instance, you could choose between three profiles; normal, discrete and basic. In a normal mode, all the applications are enabled and ready for use. In the discrete mode any power hungry application that is only a “frill” is disabled. In the basic mode, only basic communication applications (voice calls, SMS, phonebook) are available. This is essential, especially when you want to extract the most out of your phone – during a power outage, outdoor trips etc.

Going a step further, a power efficient phone should also let you know the amount of power an individual application or utility consumes, and give you the ability to enable or disable it at will.

I wonder if phone manufacturers or software designers have ever thought about it, because at the end of the day your phone is no good if it can’t last the distance.
