I was invited to speak at the Goa Institute of Management recently on Social Media and its financial implications. I made a presentation titled “Social Media ROI – Myth or Measurable”.
Here is the presentation uploaded on Slideshare.net.
The other speakers at the event included Rajesh Lalwani, Karthik Nagarajan, Rajiv Dingra, Karthik S, Gaurav Mishra, Abdul Khan and more.

Very interesting, Arun. We were talking about this very same “social media ROI” on yesterday’s #measurepr Twitter chat (I started this chat earlier this year). We’ll be continuing the conversation, if you’d care to join, on Sept. 14. It’s 12-1 pm ET, so I know that’s late in the evening for you, but it might be interesting for you.
One of the key points Don Bartholomew (@donbart) who was the special guest on the chat made was that ROI is ROI is ROI. It’s a financial metric that shouldn’t be messed with. In many cases, you might not be able to measure the ROI immediately, but you can and should be measuring value and impact. If you can show how social media efforts helped the business’ bottom line – and you can do that by setting measurable objectives at the start and tracking your progress – that goes a long, long way.

Thanks for sharing this, Arun. To @Shonali’s point, the way you stated goals and how each example was measured along with results was refreshing – if not always true ROI. Implied (I hope) is that each has an impact on ROI, although the calculations require a different process of correlations – that need doing! Shonali’s chat is an *excellent* venue for all interested to share their passions and insights – precisely the reason I’ve made it a priority this quarter to reserve that time regularly.
